Living in a CoLiving space means sharing responsibilities, including keeping common areas clean. However, there may be times when a flatmate does not contribute to maintaining cleanliness, leading to frustration and potential conflicts. It’s important to address these issues directly and constructively to maintain a harmonious living environment.
Practical Tips for Managing Cleaning Responsibilities: #
- Initiate a Conversation:
- Approach your flatmate calmly and explain the situation. Make sure to express how their lack of participation in cleaning is affecting the shared living space. For example, you might say, “I’ve noticed the kitchen is often left untidy after use, and it’s becoming a challenge for everyone. Could we discuss how to share cleaning responsibilities?”
- Create a Cleaning Schedule:
- Establish a clear and fair cleaning rota that everyone agrees on. This schedule should outline who is responsible for cleaning specific areas and on which days. Make sure to rotate tasks to ensure fairness. For instance, one week, you might be responsible for the bathroom, while another flatmate handles the kitchen, and then you switch roles the following week.

- Stick to the Schedule:
- Once the schedule is in place, ensure that everyone adheres to their assigned duties. If someone misses a task, remind them politely and ask if they need any help or adjustments in the schedule.
- Use the myKUMMUNI App for Accountability:
- If problems persist, you can use the myKUMMUNI app to keep track of cleaning duties and notify flatmates of missed tasks. This can serve as a gentle reminder and help ensure everyone is on the same page.
- Be Flexible and Understanding:
- Life can get busy, and sometimes people may genuinely forget or be too overwhelmed to complete their chores. In such cases, offer to swap tasks or adjust the schedule temporarily to accommodate everyone’s needs.
- Lead by Example:
- Sometimes, leading by example can encourage others to follow suit. If your flatmates see you consistently contributing to the cleanliness of the space, they may be more inclined to do the same.
If Communication and Arrangements Don’t Work: #
If talking and creating arrangements with your flatmate doesn’t lead to any improvements, you should report this issue to KUMMUNI by opening a ticket via the myKUMMUNI app. Follow these steps:
- Open the myKUMMUNI App:
- Log in to your account on the app.
- Select the Community Department:
- Choose the “Community” department.
- Choose “I Have a Conflict with My Flatmate”:
- Provide accurate, honest, and detailed, but brief, information about the issue.
In these cases, our Housekeeping Department will schedule a hygiene inspection ordered by our Community Department. They will inspect the apartment and create a detailed protocol. If the conditions are not up to KUMMUNI’s standards, we will take action. All tenants, including you, will receive a warning. Hygiene is a critical matter for KUMMUNI, and we do not take it lightly. Any violation can lead to the lease not being extended, and in serious cases that are rapidly ignored by tenants, lease termination may follow.
Community Support Notice: #
KUMMUNI offers community support for handling issues related to cleaning responsibilities. However, we strongly encourage tenants to communicate directly and find solutions together. Creating a ticket should be a last resort, as we cannot guarantee desired results through our community management solutions. We do not tolerate unfairness in our CoLiving spaces.
By following these steps and using the tools available through KUMMUNI, you can help ensure that everyone contributes to maintaining a clean and pleasant living environment.
